About the Course

Whether your dog is newly adopted with an unknown background, an adolescent pup with little or no formal training or an existing member of your family that could benefit from a refresher course this class is for you.  Basic Manners is for dogs 6 months of age and older. We will focus on creating that well behaved family member you are dreaming of and a dog that is a welcome member of the family.

Basic Manners will cover the challenging skills of polite leash walking and reliable recalls along with the basic cues of sit, down, stand and stay while working toward creating impulse control and building an even stronger connection between the dog and human.  Basic Manners will set you and your pup up for success in the real world. 


Topics covered include:

Basic commands:

  • sit

  • down

  • stand

  • stay and wait

  • reliable recalls

  • polite walking on lead


AND

  • chewing

  • polite greeting

  • jumping up

  • barking

  • self control

  • staying alone



With successful completion of this class your dog will earn their​ American Kennel Club (AKC) S.T.A.R. Puppy Award.

(S.T.A.R. Puppy Awards are for pets under one year of age).


The first class is our orientation and is held without dogs. It is manditory that you attend an orientation prior to attending any of our groups classes with your dog.


Prerequisites:

No previous training required. Dogs will need to show current age appropriate vaccines.

Kellys' unique ability to connect with her human students allows her to shape the learning process in ways that makes sense to both halves of the partnership: dog and human. The past thirty years she has followed and studied Suzanne Clothiers' training style and has gained her unique outlook on training from Suzanne. Kelly continues her education by participating in workshops, training camps, behavior seminars and webinars. Kelly is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, APDT, an Accredited Dog Trainer with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, IAABC-ADT, a Professional Dog Trainer with the Pet Professional Guild, PPG-PDT, a Certified Fear Free Professional as well as an AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator, STAR Puppy instructor, FIT DOG instructor and an APDT CLASS instructor. Kelly raises and shows Saint Bernard's and is proud of her owner handled AKC Champions and Grand Champions.
